Community involvement and lived experience

  • President and board member of our homeowners association.
  • Volunteer and former board member at The Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC).
  • Over 10 years providing support and a caregiver for my wife, who has hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). Our experience includes orthopedic difficulties and 38 surgeries, long COVID, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), concerns about possible mast cell activation, and digestive symptoms that have complicated eating, hydration, and nutrition.   • Nearly 50 years of experience living with a short below-knee amputation, including practical innovation and adaptation. I share my experience with prosthetic fit and function at Living with a Short Below-Knee Amputation.
  • Nearly 50 years living with a brain injury sustained at age 17, and over 25 years providing support and a caregiver for my daughter following a brain injury at age 12. She went on to earn her PhD in a field directly related to the challenges she experienced. Together, we developed a shared initiative to end social isolation and encourage meaningful participation through adaptive therapeutic activities, drawing on our lived experience and her academic expertise.
